HERO in the HOUSE!!

So, today is day 16 of school. Can I tell you that I am totally counting down to the 20th day? We had SO MUCH FUN on day 10 when Zero the Hero came to visit. This is the first year that I have for real committed to going all out and man oh man was it a hit. By time those kids went to bed, every parent knows about our new friend Zero! This is by far my favorite unit to do and really my favorite creation. J

I keep everything stapled to my calendar wall so I have everything handy when it comes time to make Zero's appearance, including this necklace I got at I Teach K this summer. I wore it all day and the kids loved it. In order for them to enter and exit the classroom, they had to say Zero's number for the day...10!!

We count the days with colored post it notes..all colored coordinated. All of the 1’s are a certain color, all of the 2’s are a certain color and so on. But, all of the tens have zero on them.
We also made these zero puppets. I have this cute pop up zero puppet too. Right now we are using him to count to ten so when it gets to ten he pops out. Eventually we will use him to count by tens too.

Zero comes with a cute little poem and a gift for our class. You can do things like cheerios but for now I think he is going to bring that day's number of items we need for our classroom or a project we are working on. For example, when we get to 30 he is going to bring us 30 fancy pencils so everyone can get one and the rest will go in the writing center.

You can click on this picture for more info. If you are doing Zero the Hero in your classroom, I would love to know what fun things you do. Please share in the comments. Have a great day!!!

Zero the Hero was always a favorite in my K class, also. I would ask parents to sign up and bring a craft that highlighted the 0 shape. The parents were very creative and the kids loved it.

Thanks for all of this great sharing. Any chance you can repost the photo? I can't read the text next to Zero. Thanks!

Hey! Love it! I purchased the Zero the Hero Unit from you and forgot I had it!!!! I saw your puppets on facebook just in time. I teach PreK so I had to adjust just a little. We made the puppets and well...duh...I cut the bottom 2-3 inches off the bottom of the bag for my little guys. They fit their little hands so much better and I put your Zero info on the back. They did love them! We do not bundle straws for the ten days. Our little guys "see" the ten better with unifix cubes and one of our state skills is more/fewer so the ten towers work out perfectly. We record the days on a sentence strips and I just put up the Zero Hero on the strip today! Love that unit. SOOOO...if you teach younger ones, this unit is GREAT!
Any chance we can purchase that necklace or your pop up Zero. TOO cute!!! Thanks!!!

WE rocked your zero the hero puppet for our 20th day of school in Hollywood, CA last week and it was a hit! As always your materials are smart, well thought out, easy to use and FUN. Thanks

Today was our 20th day in school and we wrote numbers and tally marks to 20. I bought your Zero the Hero unit and instead of making puppets, I put the head on the body and we made a cute poster. My kinders love to use the paint dabbers (bingo dabers from the dollor store), so they put 20 dots on their poster. For day 30, I will need a bigger piece of paper. Thank you for such a cute unit!!

Oh. My. Goodness. I would love to have that necklace. Do you know if they are sold anywhere? For Zero the Hero I always bring a 0 shaped snack to share with the class.
