Clipboard Craftivity FUN!

Yesterday I was feeling kinda crafty so what’s a girl to do about that? Go to Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, and WalMart! Last year I bought six clipboards from Really Good Stuff but six was not enough. Since I do Daily 5 in my classroom, we do a lot of independent all over the room kinda work so everyone really needs a clipboard.

I also have been watching all of the projects on pinterest with washi tape and wondered what all the fuss was about. So, I went SHOPPING!

I went to Hobby Lobby and was disappointed with their selection so I went to Michaels. Their selection was better but not good enough for me feel like I MUST HAVE THIS. I did buy some super cute scrapbook paper for my clipboards. I bought the bigger paper (12x12 I think). It was on sale for $0.23 each. J

At WalMart (in the office supply section, I had to ask someone for help to find it) I did find a decent selection of washi tape. Of course it wasn’t that brand but who cares. I’m cheap frugal! Scotch brand had big rolls with 20 yards each for $2.88 which I found was the best deal. I wish there was a better selection but I’m going to look online.

I bought plain wooden clipboards at WalMart for $1.44 each, modge podge, an xacto knife (bought in the craft section for $3), sponge brushes (craft section for $1) and jumbo craft sticks (for projects I will blog about later this week). So I came home and got ready to CRAFT! Can you smell the fun?

First, I outlined a clipboard onto the scrapbook paper to make a template and cut all of my sheets. I made one first to make sure it was perfect before I traced the rest of them. I just traced one pattern and used it to cut the rest of the papers out. I kept the scraps for future projects too. I first put the mod podge on the paper and put the paper on the clipboard but it created a lot of bubbles. FAIL! So, I tried putting the mod podge on the clipboard and then putting the paper on and it worked great. No bubbles.

Next step, I put the washi tape on the top and bottom. I turned it over and used the xacto knife to trim the sides and the washi tape. After that, I went over the top of the board (scrapbook paper and washi tape) again with a good layer of mod podge. This sealed it. I used a matte finish and not a gloss but I don’t think it would matter whatever you have would work. J I layed it out to dry and WaLa! I’m in love. I did chevron print and solid prints because the chevron may be too busy for some littles.

I also did two other projects yesterday but I will wait to blog about them until the end of the week.

  2. Ok, I maybe a little behind in the craft world - what is Washi tape? IS it the same as all the colored Duct Tape out there?

  3. Was it Modge podge that you put on the outside? I've never used it before! Only tacky glue :)

  4. Oh. My. Goodness! These are too cute! I have to make these before school starts!
I get most of my washi tape when it is deal on 'Pick Your Plum' or 'GroopDealz.' There is also an Etsy store called 'Washi Wishes' that has an adorable selection!
I'm so glad you shared these:)

  8. I keep seeing everyone add the washi tape on everything. I am going out shopping later and looking for them and think I need to add some color to my plain boring old clipboards!

  9. Here's a tip: Keep a school supply box (the little plastic ones that are 50 cents in August and snap shut) with sharpened pencils in it INSIDE the tub/basket with the clipboards. I used this all the time last year at our whole group time--especially for writing! The kids would walk by, get a clipboard and pencil when they sat down at the carpet, and then return them when they got up. Love the washi tape!

  11. My city has not caught up with the washi tape craze. I'm having trouble finding any! Was that first picture at Hobby Lobby? The one with the postage stamp frame? And I've never seen all that tape at our Walmart! I can't wait to find some more!!

  12. Super cute! I love them!! I did mine a while back and can't imagine not having cutesy clipboards!! I am not sure what your weather is like, but here in muggy, humid Florida, you have to seal anything you mod podge with some kind of acrylic sealer because it never quite loses that tackiness... Hopefully y'all don't have that problem!!!
